The briefing aimed to draw international attention to the ongoing crisis of democracy in South Korea, expose the alleged electoral irregularities undermining the rule of law, and emphasize the urgent need for international solidarity among free nations to defend democratic values in East Asia.

The session was moderated by Ambassador Morse H. Tan, former U.S. Ambassador-at-Large for Global Criminal Justice, and featured a keynote address by Hwang Kyo-ahn, former Prime Minister of the Republic of Korea and current leader of the Freedom and Innovation Party.

In his keynote address, Chairman Hwang Kyo-ahn declared that “Korea’s liberal democracy is facing a grave crisis,” warning that democratic citizens are being oppressed through systemic electoral fraud, judicial manipulation, and abuse of power. He stressed that the situation in South Korea is no longer a domestic issue but a global concern that threatens the integrity of the free world.

Hwang emphasized that “solidarity among the United States and other free nations is urgently needed” to defend democratic systems and human rights. He warned that “politically motivated delays in Supreme Court rulings and biased judicial procedures are eroding the rule of law,” adding that such practices undermine the very foundation of democracy. Hwang concluded by reaffirming that “The Republic of Korea and the United States are blood allies, and if Korean democracy collapses, the stability of the entire free world will be in jeopardy.”

The subsequent panel discussion brought together Grant Newsham, Senior Fellow at the Center for Security Policy; Park Joo-hyeon, President of the Freedom Lawyers Association; and Kim Sung-won, CEO of Ground C, a conservative Korean media channel. The panelists expressed deep concern over growing restrictions on freedom of expression, the concentration of political power, and foreign influence, particularly from China.

Grant Newsham warned that “left-wing forces in Korea have taken control of the government, media, and judiciary,” driving the nation toward a one-party authoritarian state. Attorney Park Joo-hyeon argued that “Korea is becoming a passive state under Chinese influence,” citing the visa-free entry policy for Chinese nationals and Beijing’s expanding economic foothold. Meanwhile, Media executive Kim Sung-won pointed out that “the current administration is suppressing freedom of speech and monitoring citizens through state-controlled surveillance systems.”

The panel collectively urged that international attention and cooperation are essential to restore democratic order and protect human rights in South Korea, reaffirming the importance of the Korea-U.S. alliance as a cornerstone of global freedom.

이후 진행된 패널 토론에는 그랜트 뉴셤(Grant Newsham) 안보정책연구센터 선임연구원, 박주현 자유변호사협회 회장, 김성원 Ground C 대표가 참여했습니다. 패널들은 표현의 자유 제한, 정치 권력의 집중, 특히 중국으로부터의 외부 영향력 확대에 대해 심각한 우려를 표했습니다.

뉴셤 연구원은 “한국의 좌파 세력이 정부, 언론, 사법부를 장악하여 사실상 일당 독재로 나아가고 있다”고 지적했고, 박주현 변호사는 “중국 공산주의의 영향 아래 한국이 수동적인 국가로 전락하고 있다”며 중국인 무비자 입국 정책과 경제적 종속 구조를 비판했습니다. 김성원 대표는 “현 정부가 표현의 자유를 억압하고, 감시 시스템을 통해 국민을 통제하고 있다”고 경고했습니다.
